Jewellery that lasts a lifetime is not a matter of luck. It is a matter of habit. The pieces that your grandmother still wears — the ones with a warm patina and a story — survived because someone knew how to look after them. That knowledge is simpler than you think.
Clean Gently, Clean Regularly
Most jewellery needs nothing more than warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristle toothbrush. Dip, brush lightly around settings and chains, rinse under clean water, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Do this once a month and your pieces will keep their original brilliance.
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for pieces with stones that are glued rather than set, and never use toothpaste — its abrasive particles scratch metal surfaces over time.
Store Each Piece Separately
Chains tangle, stones scratch, and metals oxidise faster when they touch each other. Store each piece in its own small pouch or compartment. A jewellery box with individual sections is ideal — but even small zip-lock bags work perfectly for travel.
The Last On, First Off Rule
Put your jewellery on after perfume, moisturiser, and makeup — not before. Chemicals in these products accelerate tarnish and dull gemstone surfaces. Take jewellery off before washing hands, swimming, or exercising. Chlorine is particularly harsh on both gold plating and silver.
When to Rest a Piece
Even the most well-made jewellery benefits from rest. If you wear a bracelet every day for six months, give it a week away. Let it be cleaned and kept. You will notice the difference when you put it back on.
